Class Notes: Week 11

Reflections

Corporations provide good learning experience that Carson doesn’t think he could’ve gone without.

Always think about the audience. Who is reading your resumé? If it’s a film production company, or a design company?
-Bring resumés to events and having people give feedback on them.
-Ask different people to give you an idea

What do you lead with? Hierarchy of resumé
-Don’t lead with chronological order.
-Asking advice around the ordering of your resumé.

Amy puts more emphasis on communication aspects. Follow up on email, phone call, and skype interview.
Tell me what you learned from different experiences, not simply that you worked there.

On mentors
-A team of people that you can go to for different things
-Mentors are basically people you know are willing to help you out with different angles of life
-Your creative tree of mentors
-Grabbing coffee for advice is better than asking “will you be my mentor?”

On meeting somebody
-Be professional, let them lead the conversation
-If they’re a joker, it’s okay to be a joker back

Cons of collaboration? Downsides?
-Getting people to be open about how much bandwidth they have is one of the difficulties of working with other people
-Becoming subject to their own schedules and lives (which includes their personal lives)
-Biggest challenge is prioritization and bandwidth
-Collaboration with friends has its own challenges, alongside collaboration with people who are not your friends
-Crossing the friend/business boundary
-You obviously want to maintain the friendship, so hopefully you know a little bit more about what works well with the other person, and know when to check in with friends you’re working with — the give them the extra push
-Making sure that your intensities are on the same line
-If you’re prioritizing it above a team member, take it from them and reap the benefits

As technology increases, how is working with extra hats?
-CM was an editor/animator. Over at the agency, learned more things. At Duke, wrote and shot more. On own, business/finances. About twenty hats/day.
-Acknowledge what people around you are doing, keep doing what you’re doing well, and go after it. Bust through that wall. Just start doing it, until you’re good at it.
-AU says think about what skills you can gain while you’re here, and try to further those skills in class settings and with co-curricular skills outside of class. The more you use certain skills, the better you will get.

Rough Cut #1 - Danielle & Alice

-Needs audio correction
-Maybe space it out at times
-I wanted to see some more cooking
-More breathing room
-“prints had a soul” — need to soak that in
-Perhaps do a setting shot, and then cut to the ducks
-His differences were his weaknesses; he now thinks it’s strengths
-How does his Thai identity influence his art?
-Structure of the story was pretty cool
-Nice capturing of natural sound

Rough Cut #2 - Hunter, Sarah, & Will

-Seems like a great character
-Really enjoyed the visuals
-Wanted more from the convention
-The shots close to her face
-Interview seemed really authentic
-Personal profile, focusing in on one aspect. Might not be an action or a reveal. her story comes through.
-Do you have more B-Roll from this environment?

Rough Cut #3 - Lauren, Marina, & Quinn

-Good experiential interview
-Seems halfway there; interview is good
-Interlacing is occurring. Diagonal bars. That might be in the footage, but it might be in the way the sequence settings are.
-The story and subject are pretty confusing; probably due to signage
-Felt a little bit like a promo for the company. Would like to hear about the individual a little more. Present some challenges, or some conflict.
-Maybe start with visuals of ugly produce
-Is there a difference between ugly produce and “good” produce?
-Are any charitable organizations using this produce?
-Idea is to fight food insecurity.
-Element to pursue — they’re seniors. They’re undergraduates. Maybe the story is their struggles as entrepreneurs while being undergraduates.

Rough Cut #4 - Julian, Serges, & Summer

-Answers are so polished, but it works in your favor that you don’t have to edit the heck out of them
-level out audio
-Duke is just 800 mega watts (amazing sound bytes) — maybe use to hook at the beginning
-You can still have powerful, concise stuff at the end
-Soundbytes were a little lengthy
-Music doesn’t work throughout the piece
-Opportunities to show a little more of her
-Felt like a campaign video of sorts

Editing Lab

PluralEyes is the bee’s knees! Seriously, download the trial and use it. Lobby OIT to purchase it.

-Instead of removing every gap, create new black video, drop it in on V1, stretch all the way out to fill out the whole time. drag the video selects down on top of the black video layer. move the selects back up. using the tracking tool switch to one arrow (with the double tracking, hold down shift, to only select the one layer) grabbed all remaining black video pieces, Shift-Delete (Ripple delete) to remove all black video pieces compressing all selects. Good stuff. Practice this.

Starting the edit
-Carson adds black video to the top layer, disables it, and uses it as annotations to help him understand what those soundbytes are all about. Pay your dues up from, make annotated notes, and shuffle around later.

Audio
-Use the pen tool to manually adjust volume over time, using keyframes

Shooting Slo-Mo
-If you shoot at 60fps, and put it in your 24p timeline, then you can right click on that 60fps video and slow the speed to 40% - then you’ll have beautiful 24fps slow-mo.

Sequence Settings
Create a new sequence. Drag one (1) video clip onto that sequence, when prompted, always select "change sequence settings" to match that footage.

“I’m such a ninja, I didn’t even have my tool pallet open” - Carson
