There are two spots available in the class.
Week to Week
-Production workshop
-AMI Cage. We know how to use it. We’re going to teach you next week (Week 2)
Pitch 101 (Week 2) - Pitching is so incredibly important. It is not as simple as you may think. You need to adapt it to the group you are pitching to. You need to learn the balance between your audience and your idea (as well as the amount of time you are given).
Edit Labs - There is time allocated to edit your projects before they are due. Ideally you have some material before this.
Guac Premieres
This is your time to shine. Walk the red carpet. Eat guacamole. Live the dream.
NOTE: Dress to impress (if you want). You never know who might show up (Last year, Bob Yeoman did).
Resources Page
-Check this often. It’s super helpful.
-Make sure to take note of the hours that the AMI Cage is open. If you cannot get the gear during those hours, you need to find somebody else or you will be in a really, really tight spot
-No joke, the links are all on this website. Take the time to acquaint yourself with the resources on this page. All basic questions can be answered here, so ideally you won’t have to email us looking for the contact for the cage, etc.
-Pre-Interview checklist - print this out before your interviews (multiple copies so you’re prepared when one gets eaten by your dog)
-When you are interviewing, it’s always nice to read the resources for interviewing before you arrive. It really helps you get into the right mindset.
Skills
-We know you each have various experience (or some might have no experience) with the video production process
-Don’t freak out. We want to form groups that will complement skills.
Story Requirements
-See page
-ON CONSENT FORMS: Make sure to print extra copies of consent forms. Always have them around. Take photos and send to us as soon as you complete them. Keep them on file.
-Definitely bring your hard drive to class with the file the day of the guacamole premiere because we upload all of the files to the class YouTube page
-You could throw it on your Duke Box as an alternate option
Self/Peer Evaluations
-Bring these to class the day of the guac premieres
Music suggestions
On the page
-don’t steal music
-Coldplay might not be appropriate
Scripts
-Use the format provided
If you are the DP
-Notice the responsibility to check out equipment. So critical.
(Story pitches are in two weeks, which means you have the two weeks to find ideas and make sure they are viable!!!)
(Gene Dillard - Amy had heard of him, Alex Gonzelez and I literally drove to his house after finding his website and asked if he would be open to a story. Had issues connecting with him when we needed more material. But that’s part of the discovery phase.)
Coffee Talks
-Take advantage of these. They are optional, but they are great.
-Personal note: I went to one of these and talked to Carson and Amy about my anxiety about going to Los Angeles for a variety of reasons, and they helped me weigh my options, brought up other people I could talk to, and I left feeling very relieved.
Final Thoughts
-Check your assignments
-Don’t forget your reflections
-Order your book or use the link and download the first two chapters
